Chapter 4-
Chapter four primarily consisted information about the different types of religion. It was interesting to read because I learned how religion did make major changes with society and culture. Also, most of them are practiced to this day. The main focuses were onl Socrates, Confucius, Hindu, Buddha, Jesus, and Mohammed. It's interesting because all of the religions mentioned came from different parts of the world. When I think about it, it's crazy to think that one idea or concept started from one small place and a group of people, and turned into something bigger and world wide.
I will summarize the 2 topics that I found most interesting.
First, I will start with Christianity. In the book it said that the message of early Christianity was one of the reaons why it spread gradually. The spread of faith was passed on because of miracles, healings, and the casting out of demons. I am Catholic, and miracle and healing stories were some of the things I learned growing up in a Catholic school. It also stated that Christians attracted others because of how they cared for each other. I have some people in my family who are Christian or Catholic, which are similiar yet really different at the same time. I do have to agree with what was said, Christians seem (for the most part from what I have witnessed) very caring individuals. Something I did not know was that most followers of Jesus lived in non-European regions like North Africa, India, and China.
Second, I liked reading about Buddha. Although I am very faithful to my religion, the teachings of Buddha has always attracted me in some ways. I always have had trouble finding peace (general population), but everytime I read things that was supposedly said by him, it does open my eyes and enlightens me. He is known as the Enlightened One- a human who had awakened. In the book it said that the Buddha said that he teaches one thing- "suffereing and the end of suffering". He believed that experiencing life and how imperfect it could be was the universal feature of human life. The cure for this was "meditation". It is said that those who practice and believe in this practice will reach "nirvana", which is enlightment. This would eliminate hate, greed, and delusion. My point exactly, after reading this, it had me thinking that simple meditation could really help someone's state of mind. I find this religion the most interesting and those who practice it from my opinion seem as if they are at peace.
